“A Sonic Womb,” was a live improvised performance recorded in Barcelona, was made by an inspiring figure in the world of synth music: Suzanne Ciani. Through her career, which began in the 70’s and continues to this day, she has become a prominent Buchla musician with the acquired nickname Diva of the Diode.
I was tasked with creating a poster that encapsulates the feeling of her live performance through visuals, and to translate that poster into a vinyl sleeve.
In my approach for the poster, I explored various media and subjects that could express her music, from inks to digital effects. I found inspiration one night during a power outage. I had water in a funny-shaped cup and as the light shined through the cup, I realized that playing with refraction was a strong way to express how she plays with sound waves in her music.
For the vinyl sleeve, I wanted to transform the visualization of the sound waves as refraction into a 3D form. I found a form that reminded me of my poster’s “sonic booms” and I brainstormed ways to bring them to another level.
My poster has multiple “sonic booms” because I wanted to replicate the rhythm of her music through size and layout. To contrast that noise and movement, I chose a sans serif to ground it. Since my vinyl’s sleeve is already complex, I kept the design minimal to not be overwhelming. I played with the letter placement to create depth and to translate the poster’s layered elements. In all the elements of the packaging I kept the concept of rhythm and movement.
